Sweetly Offbeat A Gluten Free Bakery

It’s been more than 15 years since Jane Mitchell, owner of Sweetly Offbeat, discovered she has celiac disease. Celiac disease is an auto immune disease in which people can't eat gluten because it will damage their small intestine. If you have celiac disease and eat foods with gluten, your immune system responds by damaging the small intestine. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. It may also be in other products like vitamins and supplements, hair and skin products, toothpastes, and lip balm. It’s extremely difficult to diagnose as each person with the disease may experience different symptoms but the bottom line is, it doesn’t make you feel very good every time you eat something with Gluten in it.

The Little Church Theater

The Little Church Theater has a rich history as a small Catholic Chapel. Owned by the Diocese of Manchester and built at the end of the nineteenth century on land purchased from Arthur Johnson, The Sacred Heart Chapel was an important part of Holderness community life for almost a century.

Irene Bildeau Leavitt was, in 1908, the first person baptized in the chapel, and used to tell wonderful stories of her time there with its congregation. She remembered several weekly masses that were often attended by boys and girls from the many summer camps in the area, as well as by the year-round residents of Holderness, Ashland and Sandwich.

Deer Creek Farm

For Heidi Hawkensen Uhlman, owner of Deer Creek Farm, horses have been an outlet to her since she was 13 years old. She has attended over 10 sanctioned dressage shows and horse trials per summer and that has become a way of life for her.  She was also a competitive Alpine Ski racer in the winter with the same intense schedule through her adolescence years until she graduated from Plymouth State College and started riding full time year-round since the age of 25; competing mostly down south in North Carolina, Florida, and Kentucky.  She met her husband in 1997 and married in 2003 in Thornton NH where they reside with their daughter Paige.

At Deer Creek Farm they have the amenities to care for all horses whether it be the high-end sport horse or the dedicated recreational rider. They welcome all levels and are proud to be a professionally run family farm.  Heidi’s husband Parker does all the haying on the farm and she manages the barn while riding and teaching too. They have one daughter who is working very hard to grow up and be in the barn as well.

Benton's Sugar Shack

The Benton Family has been making maple syrup for five generations. You might say it’s in our blood!  When the sugar house was moved to its current location in 1983 from Millbrook Road, it began as a place to sell our syrup. With more traffic and visitors on the main road, we decided to turn the family farm into a ski touring center and added a place where folks could sit and eat a small meal before skiing. We served hotdogs, hamburgers, chili, homemade soups and Ma’s famous baked beans and the basic Pancake Platter.  To keep up with the growing demand of loyal customers who were less to ski and more to eat, we added our dining room addition in 1999, and the rest is history!

Mo the Clown

Mo Fun, the artist formerly known as Mo The Clown, is a Balloon Buffoon!

What does that mean? He is irrepressible, a New Hampshire balloon artist, balloon sculptor, balloon twister, deco twister, fool and so much more!

Mo the Clown rarely performs in makeup anymore. He has found that circus clowns adopted larger than normal features to be understood from the distant seats, where they could be seen, but maybe not heard. Those characteristics can be overwhelming in a closer setting.

As the circus clown look appeared more often in day to day life its failures spawned quite a bit of Bad Clown media to fuel the imagination. Coulrophobia, the abnormal or exaggerated fear of painted clown faces and other bizarre attire (Santa, the Easter Bunny), is a common specific phobia in America today.
