Plymouth is a rural community in the central part of the state and just south of the White Mountain National Forest. Incorporated in 1763, the town is now home to approximately 6,990 residents. Plymouth State University was founded here in 1871 as a normal school, evolving as a teachers' college, a state college, and now a state university. Plymouth State University is a regional comprehensive university offering a rich, student-focused learning environment for undergraduate, graduate, and non-traditional students. PSU offers 53 undergraduate majors and 60 minors. The University has over 4,000 undergraduate students and nearly 1,800 graduate students.

Plymouth is the center for commerce and services for the local economy, which includes the surrounding towns served by the high school; Ashland, Campton, Holderness, Plymouth, Rumney, Thornton, Wentworth, Ellsworth, Waterville Valley and Warren.  Plymouth Regional High School has nearly 700 students comprised from these bordering towns.

Plymouth  has a rich cultural climate; the town enjoys both PSU's Silver Center for the Arts and the Flying Monkey Movie House & Performance Center as well as numerous collegiate sports events.
