Sugar Hill was incorporated as a town in 1962, making it the most recent in New Hampshire to be split from another town. The 563 resident town overlooks the White Mountain National Forest, with views of the Presidential, Franconia, Kinsman and Dalton ranges. Offering clean air and panoramic views from atop Sunset Hill Ridge of both the White Mountains and Green Mountains, Sugar Hill was once a fashionable Victorian resort. One of the grandest hotels added to the growing tourist area was the Sunset Hill House, built in 1880 after rail service arrived in neighboring Lisbon Village (Sunset Hill Station). The grand hotel had accomodations for 350 and staff 300 employees to look after them.
Sugar Hill is best known for the annual Lupine Festival held in June. The gardens in the village, the vast fields and farms surrounding the town, and even the roadsides leading to and from are covered with this large, showy, purple or pink flower. Festival activities can include an open air market with local vendors, an art show, concerts and a town dance. But the main attraction is the flowers themselves.
Resident students attend Lafayette Regional School in Franconia through grade 8 and then move on to Profile High School located in nearby Bethlehem.
