Woodstock's extensive land area is largely forested, and includes the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, parts of the White Mountain National Forest and the Appalachian Trail. Logging was the early primary industry and with access to railway in the mid 1800's, the area became a popular tourist destination. Many Grand Hotels were built in the White Mountains to accommodate the traveling visitors. Once Interstate 93 was built, it ultimately allowed travelers to bypass the Woodstock area so these hotels became deserted and many succumbed to fires over the years. Woodstock is home to many local attractions including; the HOBO Railroad, HOBO Hills Adventure Gold and the Lost River Gorge, all are summertime favorites.
